Moving Our Church Towards Transformation
Early in 2019, Wentworth’s membership made the difficult decision to sell its property and begin looking for a new worship space. Since then, we have heard from many people from around the city who are interested in what the future holds for our church. Below are our answers to some of the questions we are being asked most frequently:
“Is Wentworth Baptist Church closing?”
No! We’re just moving.
“Is your church still meeting on Sundays?”
Yes! We continue to gather every Sunday at 10:15am to worship God together. You are welcome to join us!
“Why are you moving?”
We believe God gives us resources to use for His glory. Our building is a resource we’ve been blessed to have over the past 95 years, and it has served us well. But we are expecting maintenance costs to increase exponentially over the next few years. The church is not a building but a people gathered by God who meet in a building, and we don’t think our mission as a church is to be building managers. We’re called to make disciples of Jesus Christ. This decision will help free up resources currently tied up in our building which we can then use to help us better lean into our God-given mission.
“Where are you moving to?”
Right now, we’re not sure. But we believe God will lead us to a new space to worship in as the sale of our property moves forwards and becomes finalized, according to His good timing. Once we’ve found a new worship location, it will be shared on Sunday mornings and on our website.
“When will you be moving?”
Right now, we’re expecting to move into a new worship space sometime in early 2021. However, this is only a tentative expectation which could change. Specific information and timelines will be announced as a possible moving date gets closer and all the details are finalized.
“So… What’s Next?”
We are prayerfully discerning what God has for us, including how our ministry will need to adapt as we undertake such a major change to our communal life together. Our membership will discern some of these next steps for our ministry in the months ahead, as we follow the Lord’s lead in developing a new ministry plan to better make disciples of Jesus and see our neighbours and neighbourhoods transformed by God’s grace.
We would appreciate your prayers during this time of transition, particularly for God’s presence to be at work in us, for perseverance, for patience, for renewed vision, and for our Lord to continue providing for us as we seek to faithfully listen to His voice and do what He says.
